statement released by the NFL regarding this award: • In his first game of 2005, New England linebacker TEDY BRUSCHI totaled 10 tackles to help the Patriots seize a 21-16 win against Buffalo. Bruschi became the first player in NFL history to return to the playing field after suffering a mild stroke. Six of his tackles were made within three yards of the line of scrimmage. With the win, New England (4-3) owns sole possession of first-place in the AFC East. The 32-year-old linebacker raised his arms early in the game to energize New England’s “12th Man” and called signals in the huddle. Often called the “heart and soul” of New England’s defense, Bruschi had been working out and attending meetings regularly since the start of training camp. In his 10th year from Arizona, this is the San Francisco native’s fifth career Player of the Week award and his third honor in his past 14 games. |

| 19 OCT 05 | The Pats made the following roster moves today: Released: Wesley Mallard (LB); Placed on IR: Gus Scott (S); Re-signed: Andre Davis (WR) and Hank Poteat (DB). |
| 17 OCT 05 | Tedy Bruschi announced that he would return to practice at a press conference today. Below is his speech: "Thank you all for coming. I think the first thing I should do is say thanks for your patience. I know I haven’t commented a lot on this. It’s been a long road to this but I appreciate your patience and your professionalism on how you handled my situation, especially the local media. I just want to say thank you for doing that. The organization from the coaches to the trainers, Mr. Kraft especially. The way that they have helped me get the best possible medical advice to make sure things were right and make sure it was possible for me to continue what I love doing. I want to thank them for that. I want to especially thank the people at Mass General who’ve been with me since day one. Dr. Greer has been huge for me. You got that statement from him. He was the physician that put his hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Tedy you’ve had a mild stroke.’ I said ‘what?’ [laughter]. He’s the guy that’s been with me. I want to thank him. The people at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital who helped me from day one on my rehabilitation to get back to walking right, seeing right and all that stuff. They really did a great job and I want to thank them. Jim Whalen the head trainer here with the New England Patriots. Joe Van Allen, Dave Granito and the training staff – they’re the best trainers in the league by far. I’ve only known them for so long but they’ve got to be the best for what they’ve done for me. Just helping me the way they have, they’ve been incredible. The strength staff – Mike Woicik, the way he’s helped me rehabilitate. My teammates – my teammates have been so supportive of me. My wife – my wife Heidi - she’s been by me ever since it started – since the 9-1-1 call. Her support has been so special to me. A special thank you to her. But having said that, here I am. I fully anticipate to practice Wednesday. It’s been a long road to rehabilitation mentally, physically and emotionally. It’s been a rough road. The first month and half of the year – my third son was born, we win an AFC Championship, we win a Super Bowl, I go to a Pro Bowl – I come home and I have a stroke. It’s been a roller coaster. It’s been a long way back and here I am. I fully anticipate practicing Wednesday. I want to help this team in any way I can. I’ve been cleared to play medically by many physicians and I’m just here to tell you – thank you to all the fans especially who have given me all their support – e-mails, letters, flowers sent to my home. The support I received from them has been absolutely incredible. I’ve said before, the fans in New England were the best in the league. I have first hand knowledge in how special they can be and how supportive they can be when a player really needs to be picked up off the ground and given support. They’ve done so much for me and I want to thank them for that." |
| 16 OCT 05 | During the second quarter (Pats @ Broncos), a statement released by the Pats concering Tedy Bruschi, was read by the announcers. The following is an exact copy of the statement as heard by the announcers and posted on the Pats website: “The New England Patriots have been advised that Tedy Bruschi
has received unanimous medical clearance from outside specialists in
the field of stroke neurology. He has also passed multiple physical
examinations by team doctors and has been cleared to resume practicing
as early as this week. The Patriots organization is satisfied that Tedy
Bruschi has received the best medical attention possible and has been
assured that he is medically cleared to resume his playing career. Tedy
Bruschi has worked very hard throughout his rehabilitation to return
to full health and has been assured by all who have examined him that
he has. With the necessary unanimous medical clearances to return, Tedy
Bruschi and his family will make the final decision as to whether he
returns to the field and begins practicing once again with the team.
The Kraft family and the entire Patriots organization want only what
is best for Tedy Bruschi and his family and will continue to support
his decision.” |
| 13 OCT 05 | Tom Brady is named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. |
| 12 OCT 05 | The Pats placed Chad Scott (CB) on injured reserve, and signed the following: Arturo Freeman (DB) and Wesly Mallard (LB). |
| 11 OCT 05 | Eric Alexander (LB) was released today. |
| 8 OCT 05 | Eric Alexander (LB) was signed to the active roster and Gene Mruczkowski (OL) was released. |
| 29 SEP 05 | According to local media reports, Kevin Faulk will be out "some
time" due to a foot injury. For Sunday's game, former Steeler Amos
Zereoue (RB) was signed. To make room, Andre Davis (WR) was cut. Jared
Newberry (LB) was released and Ryan Krug (G) was re-signed. Both were
members of the practice squard. |
| 27 SEP 05 | The Pats placed Rodney Harrison (S) on injured reserve, which means he will not be able to play for the entire season. With the opening in the rosters due to Harrison's and Light's injury, the Pats signed the following: Michael Stone (S) & Gene Mruczkowski (OL). Mruczkowski was with the Pats during pre-season; however, he was cut at the end of training camp. The Pats also released Wesley Mallard (Special Teams) today. |
| 21 SEP 05 | Pats sign Santonio Thomas (DL) to the practice squad. Earlier, Kory Chapman (RB) had signed with the Colts opening up the spot on the practice squad. |
| 9 SEP 05 | Ryan Krug (G) was released from the practice squad and P. K. Sam (WR) was signed. |
| 7 SEP 05 | Raymond Vetrone (S) was released from the practice squad, and Andre Torrey (LB) was signed. |
| 5 SEP 05 | Wesley Brit (T) was signed to the practice squard today. |
| 4 SEP 05 | Pats sign the following to their practice squad: Eric Alexander (LB), Kory Chapman (RB), Bam Childress (WR), Ryan Krug (G), Jared Newberry (LB), Raymond Ventrone (S), and Billy Yates(G). |
| 3 SEP 05 | Pats cut 17 to trim down to the 53 man limit. They are: Eric Alexander (LB), Rodney Bailey (DL), Kory Chapman (RB), Bam Childress (WR), Kyle Eckel (FB), Joel Jacobs (TE), Victor Leyva (G), Gene Mruczkowski (G), Jeff Roehl (T), P.K. Sam (WR), Grant Steen (LB), Tom Sverchek (DL), David Terrell (WR), Andre Torrey (LB), Raymond Ventrone (S), Jed Weaver (TE), and Billy Yates(G). |
| 30 AUG 05 | Cut day today, and the following Patriot players were released: Jason Anderson (WR); Robbie Gould (K); Ryan Krug (G); Chad Morton (RB/KR); Hank Poteat (CB); Santonio Thomas (DL); Ifo Pili (DL). With these cuts, this gets the Pats down to the required 65 man limit roster; however, they have to be down to 53 by 4 SEP 05. |
| 29 AUG 05 | The Pats FINALLY cut Davey today. After three years of ineffective skills on the field and no signs of improvement during any of the exhibition games, and with Cassell showing great promise, the Pats cut the cord and sent Davey packing. Fans were very upset after all the time the Pats spent with him and by sending him to NFL Europe hoping he would improve; but, it never happened. As a result, no tears will be shed with his loss. Also cut today was Cedric Cobbs (RB) who was showing promise and Dexter Reid (S) who stepped in and helped the Pats win Super Bowl XXXIX. |
| 25 AUG 05 | The Pats released Antuan Edwards (S) today. Edwards was signed a few months ago, and also played in the first two pre-season games. |
| 23 AUG 05 | The Pats acquired WR/KR Andre Davis today in a trade with Cleveland. It only cost the Pats a few late round draft picks; but, did it cost Bethel Johnson his job? Johnson's lack of maturity and his injury is certainly not helping his cause, and one has to wonder if this is a sign Johnson is being targeted for a pink slip. |
| 15 AUG 05 | The Pats place Ryan Claridge (LB) on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury and will miss the entire season. Also on the same day, the Patriots signed Ifo Pili (DL). |
| 14 AUG 05 | Pats release DL Mario Monds today. |
| 12 AUG 05 | After years of frustration with Davey's incompetence, I sat and quietly questioned whey the Pats would keep such an inaccurate QB. Davey on paper is a powerhouse. He has broken many records at LSU, earned the Sugar Bowl MVP, and was named Offensive Player of the Year in NFL Europe. However, when it comes time for the show in the NFL, he chokes. Friday he had a dismal performance overthrowing his receivers and getting picked off It is obvious he just could not command the team. Matt Cassell is the exact opposite He was a career second stringer in college at USC, and got more snaps in practice than he did in games. In fact, if you want any footage of him playing, you would have to go back to high school; yet, Cassell shined on Friday. He went 13 - 21, passed over 100 yards, ran with good agility, took some good hits, and threw a TD. Admittedly he did get some breaks as some passes should have been picked; but, if he continues to learn and show promise, it not beyond imagination he could earn the number two spot in a year or so. I can only hope the Pats either cut or trade Davey and get rid of the albatross they have been hanging on for to long. To Matt Cassell: Welcome to New England. |
| 8 AUG 05 | Pats cut Andy "Mr. Irrelevant" Stokes (TE) today. |
| 5 AUG 05 | Pats waive first year WR Ricky Bryant today. |
| 3 AUG 05 | The Pats made some roster moved today: Signed Mario Monds (DL) a free agent from Miami and Tom Sverchek (DL) a free agent from Buffalo. Rich Musinski (WR) a free agent from Tennessee was released. |
| 2 AUG 05 | The Pats and Richard Seymour have come to an agreement ending Seymour's holdout. Although Seymour will not get the raise he was looking for, he did get a one year salary increase. It is possible with Seymour in camp, that negotiations for a long term contract will commence; however, that has not been addressed at this time. Terms of the deal were not disclosed as per team policy. |
| 1 AUG 05 | Pats make some roster changes: Tim Dwight (WR) has been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and Ethan Kelley (NT) & Jake Shifinio (KR) were waived. |
| 29 JUL 05 | Training camp started today and the Pats were short one Pro-Bowler as Richard Seymour did not make an appearance. Seymour has no leverage to renegotiate his contract, as he is locked in for two more years. For every day he does not appear, the Pats have the right to fine him $6,000. |
| 28 JUL 05 | Surprising everyone in the football community, Ted Johnson announced he is retiring from football today. For more information, click HERE. |
| 26 JUL 05 | The Pats signed 1st round OL Logan Mankins yesterday; however, they did not release terms of the contract. Mankins is the last drafted player to be signed by the team, and the Pats are the first team in the NFL to have all of their draftees signed. |
| 25 JUL 05 | The Pats signed undrafted rookie WR Brandon Childress and released rookie RB Earl Charles and DT Demarco McNeil today. |
| 22 JUL 05 | The Pats signed 3rd round draft pick Ellis Hobbs who is a CB and kick returner. In order to sign him, and make room on the roster, the Pats cut undrafted free agent RB DeCori Birmingham (Arkansas). |
| 20 JUL 05 | Tedy Bruschi has decided to sit out the entire 2005 football season due to the stroke he suffered during the off-season. This announcement came as a joint statement from the Pats, Belichick, and Bruschi, even though Tedy was not directly quoted. This announcement comes out about the same time as NECN's incorrect announcement that there was a 90% chance Bruschi would play. Needless to say, NECN has egg on their face. While all the fans want to see Bruschi fully recover, and do what is best for him and family, they will still miss him on the field come opening kick off. It will be interesting to see what the Pats will do next as far as pay and status. Whereas this is a non-football injury, they do not have to pay him his salary; however, should they do that, the fans would certainly revolt. Historically, the Pats have treated players well, and did compensate Edwards (RB, injured playing beach football with the "terrible three".) while suffering a knee injury in the off-season. One has to assume the Pats will take care of Tedy the same way. The Pats also have a few choices in regards to Bruschi's status. They could put Bruschi on the non-football injury list or the psychically unable to perform list which would allow Tedy to come back and play at a later date. The other option is to place him on the injured reserve list, thus eliminating any chance for Bruschi to return for the season. To date, no announcement has been made about which list Bruschi will be on. Tedy has been the fan favorite for the past 9 years and for good reason. He is a spirited player, stands by his team regardless of outcome, represented himself without an agent during contract talks, refused to take more money from other teams to stay in New England, and always played the game no matter what the circumstances. He will be missed this year. We all wish him the very best in his recovery, and hope to see him on the field next year. |
| 17 JUL 05 | Scott Pioli signs an extension contract with the Patriots. Unfortunately, no terms of the deal were disclosed. |
| 11 JUL 05 | I realize when I die I doubt they will allow me to be waked at Gillette Stadium; therefore, I hope to be put to rest the same way of the gentleman in this story. He was the ultimate fan for the Steelers. Click HERE to read the story. |
| 24 JUN 05 | Pats officially sign Ryan Claridge (LB) and Matt Cassell (QB) to four year contracts. |
| 22 JUN 05 | The Pats signed former Jet return man Chad Morton to a one year deal. Morton who can be used as a running back if needed, excels in special teams. He averages 24 return yards on kickoffs and 9 on punts. Morton was recently waived by the Skins, has also played with the Jets and Saints. |
| 15 JUN 05 | Travis Conway (long snapper) and Mike Lorenz (offensive tackle) were waived by the Pats today. Both were undrafted rookie free agents that signed with the team in late April of this year. |
| 13 JUN 05 | The players showed up at Robert Kraft's house for the ring ceremony yesterday and were not disappointed. The Pats received their rings, which were bigger than last year weighing in over 4 ounces with nearly 5 karats of diamonds. Seymour did not miss out on this event and was present at the ceremony. |
| 9 JUN 05 | Richard Seymour was an unexpected no show at mini camp yesterday, and Coach Belichick confirmed his absence as "unexcused". Why he was absent is a mystery; however, there is speculation in the media that Seymour is unhappy with his contract and wants it restructured. Typically the Pats have not done that in the past but, did so this year for Brady who had two years remaining on his previous contract. |
| 8 JUN 05 | According to the Boston Herald, Tedy Bruschi will miss the mandatory Mini Camp from 9 JUN - 11 JUN. It is still undecided on whether he will be in attendance for training camp or any portion of the regular season. |
| 7 JUN 05 | The Pats signed free agent defensive back Antuan Edwards. Edwards, the 25th pick in the 1999 draft, was selected by Green Bay where he played for five years. Last year, he started with St. Louis, went to Miami, and there he suffered an injury. Miami released him at the end of the season. |
| 2 JUN 05 | The Pats waived recently signed quarterback Chris Redman and offensive lineman Lance Nimmo. |
| 22 MAY 05 | Troy "Bingo, I got bingo, I win again!" Brown is back with the Patriots. The Pats cut Brown in March to reduce his salary and save some room under the cap. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. |
| 17 MAY 05 | Otis "My Man" Smith signed a one day contract with New England today so he could retire as a Patriot. |
| 13 MAY 05 | Patriots sign free agent offensive tackle Victor Leyva. He played with Cincinnati in 2002; but, did not see any action in 2003. He was later cut by the Bengals in the first week of 2004 and did not play the rest of the year. |
| 8 MAY 05 | According to the Boston.com, Brady signs six year $60,000,000 deal with the Patriots. Click here for more information. |
| 4 MAY 05 | The Pats cut Nose Tackle Keith Traylor today. Whereas Traylor is 35, it will be interesting to see if he will retire or attempt to sign on with another team. |
| 30 APR 05 | The Pats signed backup QB Doug Flutie to a one year contract. This is an interesting scenario. Flutie, played with the Pats after his desperation pass was caught by Phelan at BC. Flutie got the recognition after throwing a Hail Mary, even though Phelan caught it between three defenders. Flutie then signed with the Pats, played a little bit, did not make the grade, then went to the Bears. Not cutting it there, he went to the CFL for quite some time. He then left the CFL in an attempt to become an NFL starter, and never made it. After tours with Buffalo and San Diego, Flutie was always the backup, though he did start a few games. Now that the Pats have him, he will once again become a backup QB. The Pats now have the following for QBs: Brady, Davey, Redman, Cassel, and Flutie. I suspect Davey will be cut. He is accurate as a Scud Missile and as effective as a pea shooter. Redman may be put on IR pending his recovery. This would leave the Pats with 3 QBs. If Redman is successful, the Pats may put Cassel on the practice squad. But, don't be surprised if they keep 4 active quarterbacks. The Pats have done it before. Just ask Tom Brady. At one time, he was fourth on the depth chart. |
| 27 APR 05 | The Pats signed cornerback free agent Chad Scott yesterday. Scott spent all of his eight years in the NFL with the Steelers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. |
| 25 APR 05 | Pats make their draft picks: Round 1: Overall 32: Logan Mankins: G: 6-4, 307 lbs: Fresno State Round 3: Overall 84: Ellis Hobbs: CB: 5-9, 188 lbs: Iowa State Round 3: Overall 100: Nick Kaczur: G: 6-4, 319 lbs: Toldeo Round 4: Overall 133: James Sanders: SS: 5-10, 207 lbs: Fresno State Round 5: Overall 170: Ryan Claridge: OLB: 6-2, 259 lbs: Nevada-Las Vegas Round 7: Overall 230: Matt Cassel: QB: 6-5, 230 lbs: Southern California Round 7: Overall 255: Andy Stokes: TE: 6-5, 245 lbs: William Penn |
| 20 APR 05 | The Patriots announced that individual game tickets will go on sale on 21 MAY 05 at 10:00 am. Click here for more information. |

| 23 MAR 05 | Don Davis a Pats linebacker and unrestricted free agent re-signed with the Pats today. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. |
| 23 MAR 05 | According to the Boston Globe, Bruschi has hired an agent, and is considering sitting out the 2005 season. The paper also reports, sitting out of the season may be in the best interest of both parties so the Pats would not take a salary cap hit of over 2 million, and Bruschi could possibly be paid his full year's salary. |
| 22 MAR 05 | The NFL announced that the Patriots will kick off the 2005 season with a home opener on Thursday, 8 SEP 05, at 9:00 pm. No surprise there; but, what is a shocking, is the Pats will open up against Oakland and not the Colts or Steelers. |
| 21 MAR 05 | Pats receive three compensatory picks from the NFL. They are: 37th pick in the 3rd round, 34th pick in the 5th round, and the 41st pick in the 7th round. |
| 21 MAR 05 | For the first time in NFL history (86 years), an NFL game will not be played on US soil. On 2 OCT 05, at 8:30pm, Eastern Time, the Cards will host the Niners in Mexico City. While I realize this is not Pats related, this is certainly very interesting. |
| St. Patrick's Day | The Pats will face the New Orleans Saints (18 AUG 05 @ 8:00 pm) and New York Giants (1 or 2 SEP 05) at home and will take to the road to battle the Green Bay Packers (25 - 29 AUG 05) and Cincinnati Bengals (11 - 15 AUG 05) for the pre-season. |

| 8 MAR 05 | Stephen Neal, OL, has signed a contract with the Patriots. Terms and length of the contract have not been disclosed at this time. |
| 7 MAR 05 | Pats hire Pete Mangurian as their new Tight Ends Coach. Mangurian was out of football last year; however, he was the Offensive Coordinator for the Falcons in 2003. |
| 6 MAR 05 | Patrick Pass, FB, has signed a two year contract with the Patriots. Terms of the contract have not been disclosed at this time. |
| 4 MAR 05 | Free agent David Patten has signed a deal with the Redskins. Patten was the ONLY player in Patriots history, and sixth in NFL history to run, throw, and catch a TD in a single game. He did it vs Indy in 2001. |
| 4 MAR 05 | According to Boston.com, Duane Starks, CB and six year NFL Player has signed with the Patriots in a trade worked out with Arizona. The Pats sent the Cards their 3rd round draft pick, and the teams swapped places in the 5th round. |
| 3 MAR 05 | According to Bostonherald.com, Duane Starks CB out of Arizona, is close to signing with the Patriots. |
| 2 MAR 05 | Joe Andruzzi, a free agent, leaves the Pats and signs with Cleveland for a $9,000,000 four year contract. |

| 1 MAR 05 | Phifer is the latest casualty of recent cuts as the Pats released him today. Phifer's salary was approximately $2,000,000 a year, and will free up some money under the cap. |
| 25 FEB 05 | Pats fight the Law and the Pats won.... Pats cut Law freeing up $9,000,000 in salary cap money. The salary cap for each team in the NFL this year is $85,500,000. |
| 24 FEB 05 | Pats name Joel Collier Assistant Defensive Backs Coach. Collier was coaching for Miami last year. |
| 24 FEB 05 | Pats cut the following: CB Earthwind Moreland; TE Zeron Flemister; DL Buck Rasmussen; and L Wilbert Brown. |
| 22 FEB 05 | Adam Vinatieri was designated the the non-exclusive player by the Patriots. What does this mean? Vinatieri can negotiate with other teams if an agreement is not signed with the Pats; however, the Pats can either match the offer, or let him go and secure two first round draft picks from the other team. This is highly unlikely, as the Pats will surely want to retain their ice filled veins kicker. |
| 18 FEB 05 | For the first time in Gillette Stadium history, ticket prices will be raised for the upcoming year. They are: Sideline 100s from $99 to $125; Corner/End zone 100s/200s from $75 to $89, Sideline 300s, from $65 to $75, and Corner/End zone 300s from $49 to $59. |
